The Tubs: Hard Life review
(Merge)Britain’s best indie-rockers hold fast to their defiantly old-school sound, slipping wry sideways looks at despair in among hooky melodies that always sound like a good time
TL;DR
- The Tubs' third album, 'Hard Life,' has garnered critical acclaim for its distinct old-school indie-rock sound.
- Frontman Owen Williams's lyrics are alarmingly frank about personal struggles, including mental health and grief, often with a darkly comic, self-deprecating tone.
- The album's music features a blend of distorted and acoustic guitars, with melodies that are hooky and major-key, creating an energetic sound.
- The Tubs' traditional musical approach and lack of focus on current trends are seen as part of their appeal.
- The album includes a cover of a Prince outtake, "Do Yourself a Favour," re-imagined with the band's signature guitar sound.
