Atlanta’s Dream Are One Win Away as Liberty’s Comeback Falls Short
Atlanta survived a late New York rally to win 101-98 in overtime and take a commanding 2-0 semifinal lead. The Dream’s depth and clutch execution offset the absence of All-Star Allisha Gray, while the Liberty face elimination at home.
Atlanta has turned a depleted roster and two tense finishes into a commanding position: the Dream are one victory from their first WNBA Finals appearance since 2013, while the defending champion New York Liberty must win three straight to survive.
The central difference between the teams was execution under pressure. Atlanta led late in regulation but nearly surrendered the game after Sabrina Ionescu’s deep three-pointer and an Atlanta shot-clock violation opened the door for New York. Breanna Stewart then converted in traffic to make it 86-85, a sequence that reflected the Liberty’s resilience but also Atlanta’s vulnerability.1
The Liberty’s version of the game emphasizes the missed opportunity. Stewart finished with 35 points, including 25 before halftime, while Marine Fauthoux’s three-pointer with 10.3 seconds left forced overtime after Atlanta failed to close out regulation. But New York could not carry that momentum into the extra period. Ionescu’s overthrown pass late in overtime handed Atlanta another chance, and Angel Reese made both free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining.2
Atlanta’s account, by contrast, puts the spotlight on its depth and defensive-minded stars. Reese scored 23 points and supplied six of the Dream’s 13 overtime points, while Jordin Canada added 23 points and eight assists. Naz Hillmon’s go-ahead layup with 20.8 seconds left provided the decisive margin. The Dream also overcame the absence of Allisha Gray, their leading scorer, who missed the game with a hand injury and remains day-to-day.1
Both perspectives point to the same pressure point: New York generated enough offense to stay alive, but Atlanta made the defining plays. Game 3 shifts to Barclays Center on Friday, where the Liberty must finally turn their late rallies into a win.
