Ottawa Pledges $100M for Palestine at UN General Assembly

Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a $100 million aid package for Palestine aiming to help preserve the “possibility of a two-state solution” and to provide humanitarian aid for Gaza and the West Bank. The bulk of the financial package—$80 million—will be earmarked for humanitarian assistance, Carney told reporters on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The remainder will be allocated toward development funding for security programs, including supplementary funds for a multi-year initiative to train police in the West Bank, he said during the Sept. 22 press conference. “In Gaza, immense human suffering continues,” Carney said. “Next door, Israelis continue to live with existential threats from Hamas and from Iran and its proxies.”
