A Different World review
Many of the original cast of this Cosby Show-spinoff are back (including Jada Pinkett-Smith, briefly). Its look at life on a black college campus has its sights set firmly on comedy
TL;DR
- A reboot of the pioneering black sitcom 'A Different World' has been released, set at a historically black college (HBCU).
- The new series follows Deborah, daughter of original characters Dwayne and Whitley, as she navigates college life.
- It addresses contemporary issues such as financial struggles, safe sex, and racial health inequalities, alongside typical YA themes like relationships and unlikely friendships.
- While it aims for comedy-drama, some critics find the handling of serious topics to be surface-level.
- The reboot aims to celebrate black joy and HBCU culture, with a soundtrack and focus on sisterhood.
- The season ends with unresolved plot points, suggesting a potential for a second season.
