Denver’s Defense Rescues the Broncos After Their Offense Collapses Against Seattle

Denver escaped Seattle 17-14 in overtime, but the win exposed a stark divide: a dominant Broncos defense versus an offense that produced only 36 second-half yards.

Denver’s 17-14 overtime victory over Seattle was less a statement of offensive strength than a survival act built on defensive pressure, turnovers and one decisive mistake by Sam Darnold.

The Broncos controlled the opening half, taking a 14-3 lead on touchdown runs by J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey. Denver’s defense then protected that advantage even as the offense nearly disappeared. The Seahawks’ account emphasizes the broader season stakes: the defending champions fell to 3-3 after their second loss in five days, while Denver emerged from a difficult six-week opening stretch at 4-2. The Broncos’ Alex Singleton captured the home team’s preferred interpretation: “A defensive battle and that’s how we wanted it, and we finished on top.”

The more critical view is that Denver’s offense was barely functional after halftime. Bo Nix managed 107 passing yards, and the Broncos punted on all six second-half possessions while producing only 36 yards. Seattle capitalized late, with George Holani’s touchdown and a two-point conversion pulling the Seahawks within three before Jason Myers’ field goal forced overtime.

The difference was the defenses’ ability to create decisive moments—and Seattle’s failure to avoid them. Denver intercepted Darnold twice in regulation, sacked him five times and forced another turnover before McMillian’s overtime interception at Seattle’s 43-yard line. Darnold finished with 278 yards but no touchdowns and two interceptions, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s 12 catches for 134 yards could not offset the giveaways.

That contrast defines the result. Denver’s conservative, mistake-averse approach held long enough for Wil Lutz to kick the winning 53-yard field goal, but the Broncos will need far more from Nix and the offense to turn an ugly victory into sustained momentum.
